Carnival! Spain

Spanish Carnival

Have you ever heard of Carnival?  February in Spain right before lent (in Spain after carnival people go until Easter not eating meat) most cities throw a HUGE party!  Many people describe it as a mix between a street party, masquerade, and circus!  There are amazing costumes, singing, dancing, parades, and lots of food!

There are many theories on how carnival started.  Two of the most popular beliefs are that:

1.  A long time ago catholic churches would hold a costume party the day before lent and that has evolved into carnival.

2.  The other is that Spain took carnival from another country and added their own flair to it.
Carnival can go for 1-4 days depending on where you are in Spain.
Carnival is so special there have been quite a few books written about it!  I recently read a carnival book in Spanish called “Carnaval by: Ramon Fernandez Numen” It was very interesting, it was more of a story book that a facts book which was nice.  🙂
Carnival is spectacular anywhere.  But, in Spain the two most popular places to enjoy carnival are in Cadiz or Tenerife.  Carnival is a big part of Spain.  I can’t wait for the time I get to experience it myself!
