The festival
After walking around town and seeing all the signs about the festival I knew I wanted to go. I figured out pretty quick that they are serious about their cream cake after seeing cream cake in every store. The more I learned the more excited I was to go!
The next day we all dressed in our warmest clothes and grabbed our cameras. We walked a the mile or so from the campsite into Bled. We went early to make sure that we had seats outside of the hotel, and it was a good thing we did too. While we waited we ordered a few vegetable baguettes and hot chocolate.
The hot chocolate was so delicious! It was like liquid chocolate, best I’ve ever had. I knew it was going to hit the spot for my sweet tooth when the waitress gave us our mugs with a few packets of sugar.
“Here’s some sugar in case its not sweet enough for you. But trust me, you won’t need it.” She said, and she was right! The baguettes were fantastic as well! With big slabs of roasted vegetables and cheese and a dressing of truffle oil I couldn’t have asked for something better! It was gourmet all the way.
The cream cake
At three pm the cream cakes were two for the price of one about 3,5 euro. They served cream cakes out of the hotel for the people in sitting outside the hotel which was were we were. They also set up tables just outside the hotel with to go boxes of cream cakes. By the time it was three there was a long line of people inside and out! I couldn’t believe so many people showed up to buy cream cakes!
Also at three the band Muff started playing cover songs for some popular songs like “Funhouse” and “Diamonds” they were really good too!
There were choices of chocolate, berry, and traditional cream cakes. We got two berry and two traditional. One bite and I knew why there were so many people lined up outside! It was creamy, fluffy, silky, crunchy, and just plain amazing! While we were eating a lady came started to tell a little history of the cream cake and about the festival.
That day was the 60th annual cream cake festival. It was also the day they made the twelfth millionth cream cake! And the twelfth millionth had been served and it had a surprise inside that you could turn in for a bigger surprise! Later a dance group also performed and the band played some more as well.
History of the cream cake
When I got home I looked up some history of the Bled cream cake. They claim to have the best cream cake in the world. They only make their cream cakes with natural ingredients fresh every day. The Lake Bled cream cake recipe was created by a man named Ištvan Lukačević who had just moved to Bled from in the 1940’s from Senta. He became the head pastry chef at the hotel and created the recipe based off of a recipe from Vojvodina with his own flair.
I’m so happy that I was able to experience this festival! I hadn’t even known it existed so it was fascinating to learn about. Some of the money raised I found out was to help remove the zebra mussels from Lake Bled I found out as well. I really enjoyed my time and would highly recommend this festival.
