Barbary Apes In Gibraltar

Gibraltar

I have written several times about Gibraltar in the past, and everyone seems to like hearing about this fascinating place.  So today I decided to write about a more specific thing in Gibraltar, the apes.  If you would like some more information about Gibraltar before reading about the apes, then click on one of my previous posts about Gibraltar below.

The Apes

The apes of Gibraltar are lots of fun to watch, the best place to have ape interactions is at the ape cave.  The ape cave is one of the places you can visit that is not to far of a hike from the bottom of the rock.  I suggest going in the evening or morning to have more luck with the monkeys as they tend to get wound up with many tourists around.

When you get close to the ape cave make sure to hide anything shiny such as earrings, bracelets, etc.  Also, the apes WILL open backpacks and get into your purses, so keep an eye on them at all times.  I know this from experience, as I saw this happen first hand several times.  😉monkeys in gibraltarIf you want to get a monkey on your back, a quick way to get them on your back is to bring an empty backpack and crouch down beside them.  Make sure to keep an eye on the apes to make sure that they don’t get possessive or aggressive, if they do than just move away.  Gibraltar monkeysAnother quick way to get close to a monkey is to close your fists, bend down near a friendly apes, and turn your fists so they are facing the ape.  Typically the ape will be curious and go next to you and open your fists to see if there is anything inside.  Make sure that you NEVER feed the apes.  If they see food or get any they will become aggressive, and you don’t want that.

Sometimes the apes will jump on your back as well, make sure that you don’t get scared and just stay calm and wait till it jumps off again.  It is so much fun to interact with the apes.  You can really tell how intelligent they are.  They also are great for photos!  apes in gibraltarHere was my experience with an ape a little over a year ago.  Haha, that was so much fun and a great memory that I will always remember!  Have fun in Gibraltar!
